Guatemala 2012

This trip was my first to Guatemala, and to somewhere other than Haiti. I was excited and didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised! Landing in the capital, Guatemala City and taking a 4 hour van ride through beautiful countryside, the roads were in very good shape (compared to Haiti). We were up in the mountains at about 8,000 ft. elevation, surrounded by beautiful mountains. The city we stayed in was called Quetzaltenango, which was the Spanish name, meaning the city of the Quetzal which is the National Bird of Guatemala, The Quiche Indians named the city Xela (Shay-lay) which means 10 wise men. This city is surrounded by 10 mountains, hence the name. We worked at a construction site for the Quiche Health and Training Center. We worked very hard in dust and high winds on a tight schedule of one week, with limited time spent at the work sight. We were blessed fair weather and a great work effort by what we call The Three Amigos. Joe, Ron and I, with the help of Jose, Fransisco, and Marco, we leveled out the work site which was just an uneven patch of weeds when we arrived. Through many wind gusts and Mini Dirt Tornadoes (Dust Devils only bigger) and a lot of prayers we made it and completed our project with just a few minutes to spare before work had to b stopped on the last day.

Each day while serving the Lord in Quetzaltenango we could see the Lord’s hand upon us as we dealt with challenges. Each day we praised the Lord for His answers to prayer and His blessings as we labored not in vain. Each day we thanked the Lord for His daily provisions while asking forgiveness for our doubts and weaknesses. When we needed help our cry went out to the Lord who blessed use beyond what we imagined. The Lord brought to us Marco, Francisco Louise and Dwayne to help. It was only later did I truly realize not just for their help, but for a Spirit bathed fellowship that either one day I can enjoy again there in Guatemala or certainly in Glory.

Mission Statement MISSION STATEMENT OF SFP As Christ’s ministers we dedicate ourselves to the Word of God and the teachings of Jesus Christ. We further dedicate ourselves to set a Godly example to those we serve through a Christian lifestyle, bear witness of what Christ has done in our lives, and share the Gospel message with the lost. We pledge ourselves to respect the work of other ministries, to lift them up in prayer, and to work with them for the furtherance of God’s Kingdom. Sustainable Food Production, SFP, is a Christian based organization dedicated to helping people help themselves by growing better gardens and healthier livestock. We are a small group of believers representing several church denominations and operating as a part of Global Compassion Ministries. Our goal is to introduce improved gardening techniques, provide quality seed, and improve goat and chicken production in order to strengthen families and promote food production independence.
